Vietnam Industry Innovation Index
Innovation Research and Consulting Projects
The Vietnam Industry Innovation Research (VIIR) is a joint initiative between VinUniveristy and the Portulans Institute (PI). PI was founded and was presided by Professor Soumitra Dutta, Dean of the Saïd Business School at Oxford University, originator of the Global Innovation Index (GII), and a member of the VinFuture Prize Council. The VIIR project aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of industry innovation for Vietnam.
The VIIR project revolutionizes innovation evaluation by delving into not only the national ecosystem but also industry and organizational-level innovation. It recognizes that the elements of industrial innovation can typically be classified into two overarching categories: the first category refers to the economy’s comprehensive ecosystem while the second category pertains to the unique ecosystem of an individual organization. These two integral categories constitute the foundational structure of the analytical layers of the VIIR. This two-layered approach, as well as the twofold analysis of inputs and outputs in productivity and readiness, makes it Southeast Asia’s first comprehensive study on industry innovation and the only one for Vietnam. Specific pillars being assessed in this study are Business Environment or Core, Technology, Human Capital, Leadership, and Business, Societal, and Environmental Innovation. During the first year of the study, organizations from the Healthcare, Hospitality, and Retail Commercial Leasing industries form part of the second category analysis. In June 2023, a conference to share results from the VIIR was conducted by VinUniversity in collaboration with Distinguished Professor Soumitra Dutta.
Following the success of the VIIR conference, VinUni organized the official kick-off ceremony for the Vietnam Industry Innovation Index (VIII) on December 21, 2023, attended by the deputy minister and leaders of the Ministry of Science and Technology as well as representatives from businesses and universities. The VIII represents an enhanced version of the VIIR with the primary objective is to assess the innovation levels across industries in Vietnam. The project is honored to receive guidance from the Ministry of Science and Technology of Vietnam (MOST) and technical support from the University of Oxford and the Portulans Institute. VIII is still being implemented and results are expected to be announced in December 2024.
